Artist Statement

I completed my BA (Hons) in Art and Design from Brighton University in June 2005. Three years ago I started working with installation art and video, having been largely a painter, in order to explore new ways of expressing my thoughts and ideas. Installation art is not an art form defined in terms of its medium but in terms of the message it conveys, by whatever means. Its multifarious nature makes it possible to add layers of meaning. So I have found it to be very fruitful vehicle for exploring deep subjective experience. My work is often about the darker side and suppressed memories. Since graduating I have been working on a smaller scale making boxed work which I regard as “mini” installations, encaustic art which incorporates collage and altered books. The encaustic pieces often include hand written letters which is a very personal reminder of that person. The books are reminders of the passing of time, the left hand side (the part we have already read) represents the past and I like to seal this side because we cannot return to it, the right hand side is the future and I often include lenses to help us to predict what will happen to us.
